The Mystery of More

Do you want more of God?

Logic says, “Forget it. Not possible. Not plausible. Not happening.”

It does sound exciting, though, doesn’t it? In a way, as we ponder, maybe communion with God is logical. Why else would a good and flawless Creator decide to make us in the first place?

But what if it’s more than a logical conclusion? What if it’s a sacred journey of God-bonding that fills every corner of our being and lasts forever? What if God wants to actually be ONE with us all the time, every day, all night, and into eternity?

Certainly, we can’t discount that Jesus introduced the whole concept. Nor can we discount what He clearly said, “Abide in Me, and I in you.” John 15:4 (NIV)

Wow! Abiding implies a state of being that is lived, integral to everything we are and do. It’s not like a casual New Year’s resolution that we pull from the wild blue yonder of our imaginations. It’s God’s will spoken personally to us by the Word of God Himself.

On some level, we crave more than an occasional experience with God, especially once we’ve tasted His goodness. We can’t help but yearn for His constant, faithful, perfect love—parental, warm, and safe—to hover over, guide, and protect us.

But the concept of God abiding in us and, even more surprising, we in Him? If that’s possible, it is the consummate mystery of all mysteries, wonder of all wonders!

Consider all the theology of the ages, teachings and arts, preachings and writings, and now podcasts and millions of digital imprints. Expansive doesn’t even begin to cover what’s “out there” about God.

But all that amassed revelation is pitifully minute while the vastness of pure God truth billows unfettered throughout the universe.

Our acquired knowledge is no more than a few gallons in an endless ocean, not even enough to moisten the shoreline of planet earth.

God is way beyond all of that, but it doesn’t mean He can’t reach us.

And it doesn’t mean we can’t commune with Him. So what’s in the way?

Perhaps our limited brains have yet to grasp how tiny our great learning is. Moreover, and possibly worse, perhaps we’re not positioned for the mystery of all mysteries until we correctly asses His eminent position as the One and Only, “I Am Who I Am.” ,

As that revelation brings us to our knees, we realize that the High God of Whom we speak is the singular, highly-exalted, one and only true Commander of the heavens and all that is and happens in time-bound and eternal frameworks. So whatever is in-between those frameworks is everything that is, has been, or ever will be. But there are no frameworks that can contain an Infinite Being with no beginning, end, or limits. We can’t assign a timeline to His existence, and we have no way to define much less confine an Omnipotent Someone with no beginning, end, or limits.

MAYBE communion life really does resemble an ocean.

MAYBE we have to dive into the deep unknown to find the mystery of more, no matter how far it takes us, and be willing to let the beauty and immensity of God surround, embrace, and fully abide in us.

MAYBE we need to float when it’s time to float, crawl when it’s time to crawl, back stroke when it’s time to back stroke, side stroke when it’s time to side stroke, or even tread water in a hurricane, if necessary; but, no matter what, we must let the waves carry us to Him, knowing with all assurance from heaven that there is an anchor for our souls. His name is Jesus, and we’re safe as long as we hold onto Him.

MAYBE there’s no formula with God in the ocean of His abiding. It’s His ocean. If we want a formula, we’ll never find where, or more accurately, to Whom we belong.

So what’s next? I want more of God all the time. How about you?

Here’s a humble start: we gratefully acknowledge that we can’t make it happen on our own. He has sovereign rights to what belongs to Him, and that includes us. He wants to share the ocean, but it will happen on His terms when we abandon ourselves to the joyous pursuit of not being in control.

Then we can experience Jesus Who chose to join us in the sea of humanity, showing us the Father’s glorious love and positioning us by His Spirit in a communion so strong no one and nothing can snatch us from Him. Jesus is the reason we know with rock-solid certainty that God wants to be one with the likes of us. Jesus is the way to the mystery of more of God, the ocean of abiding communion.

Praise! Praise! Praise!
