Your Voice Matters

Your voice matters. Have you ever heard that phrase? It’s important to understand what it means.

Whatever you do, speak, or create leaves an image, a touch of you, on it. Whether you’re aware of it or not, your voice is the gateway to knowing and being known. It can be verbal or nonverbal, and it doesn’t have to be fancy, famous, or far-reaching. But it does need to be honest, freely shared, and received respectfully.

From a writer’s perspective, voice describes an identifiable use of vocabulary, tone, point of view, and syntax. It refers mostly to style, message, and the nuances of personality imbedded in the work. Similarly, since we’re all creative, voice refers to how we imbed our individuality and convictions in all of our life expressions.

How do you develop your voice in life and art? Here are a few tips:

  • Discern: Did you have the kind of family upbringing that encouraged you to speak your mind? How about the teachers in your life? Were you rewarded for being honest? Not everyone had that kind of freedom as a child at home or in other venues. If you did, feel blessed. But if you didn’t, it’s all right to forgive and move on. Yes, I realize that’s easier said than done. I’ve been there. But it’s never too late to make things right with yourself and find peace. Sometimes simply understanding your emotional roots can help. When you appreciate and value your own voice, the real you will emerge stronger than ever before.
  • Discover: What’s your purpose in life? What does your unique voice want to say? I suggest you formulate a word, phrase, or sentence, making it as simple and memorable as possible. For some people, this takes some digging in their inner world, but it’s totally worth it. You will rarely experience lapses in creativity when you are convinced of your purpose.
  • Determine: How’s your schedule looking? Does it mirror your priorities and the purpose that gives substance to your voice? Or are you scattered and unfocused? Time draws boundaries on our days, and if we truly believe our voice matters, we will build the kind of life that doesn’t impede our creativity and gives us the freedom to pursue what really counts.

Do all of us a favor today. Discover your voice and use it well. No one else can be, do, and speak your message the unique way you can.
